PostSubject: GETTING AROUND IN RICKSHAW   Fri Oct 31, 2008 12:33 am

There are many ways to get around in Nepal. Most visitors go around by hired cars or tourist buses and some by Taxi. One of the more interesting ways of getting around in Kathmandu city is by Rickshaw.

Rickshaws are a wonderful way of getting around Nepal and as such they are a very popular mode of transport. Especially in the areas like Thamel and the Kathmandu durbar square surroundings, this mode of transport has gained popularity. The Rickshaw is easy to go around as you can see the views openly. Above all it is eco friendly as no smoke or pollution is emitted.

The word “Rickshaw” originates from the Japanese word ‘jinrikisha’ which literally means “human-powered vehicle”. Rickshaws are usually three wheeled vehicles and pulled by bicycle where the Rickshaw puller rides it. Thus a Rickshaw puller has an arduous work of riding the Rickshaw. However, in more recent times Rickshaws have been outlawed in many countries in Asia due to numerous accidents.

You may also find in this respect that prices for Rickshaw journeys vary considerably. It is worth bearing in mind however, that Rickshaw drivers in Nepal are extremely poor and that most of them live below the poverty line. Rickshaw drivers’ occupation in Kathmandu is usually a family run business. A Rickshaw puller each day earns form as Rs 100 to Rs 500. Some of them are lucky if they find someone who gives them tips as a reward for their efforts.

However, Rickshaw pullers in Kathmandu can be found in very few places mainly because of the road problems as it is not a flat land, which makes it very tough to ride on those ups and downs of the streets in Kathmandu. This is why Rickshaws in low lands that is in Terai region, more prominent.

For tourist taking a ride around in Rickshaws is a great way of going around as it is open. So one can easily get the great views and easily stop by to have a look at the attractions. Money wise also Rickshaws are very reasonable too.

Tourist share that they love traveling in Rickshaws and wish it was available in more sites of Kathmandu.

If vehicular movement especially in heritage areas in Nepal can be regularized and Rickshaws be used it can be added attraction share many.

Until then have a great ride in Rickshaw!!
