Since the 15th century, an area of the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale has mysteriously claimed an untold number of ships, planes and lives. Even today, the region remains a serious danger to travellers –there were three reported incidents in 2004 alone. Perhaps the most famous case was that of Flight 19 –a group of American bombers that went missing in December 1945, while training over the Atlantic. The bombers encountered unusual phenomena and irregular compass readings, despite the clemency of the weather and the experience of the pilots. When the five planes failed to return, the Navy’s official report could not explain the incident, attributing the disappearance to “causes or reasons unknown”.
